CINECLUB AT SCHOOL

Classes or school events with film screenings and discussions are a proven worldwide practice in the informal education, positively complimenting the educational needs of the younger generation. We improve this practice by the addition of methods, the selection of short films and specific approach to the communication with students, so they can develop their analytical thinking, be provoked to be more inquisitive and feel art as something that can enrich them.

Kinematograf’s activities are not only positive, but very necessary in the process of exploration and implementation of new educational techniques that include cinema.
- South-West University "Neofit Rilski"

Kinematograf has inspired thousands of young people to watch short films, they are really devoted to creating audiences and new opportunities for the authors.
- Nu Boyana /filmcenter/

To the hosts "Kinematograf Media" I wish to keep spreading short films with the same passion.

GOALS

  • INTEREST IN STUDYING

At the heart of this project is the student. The films and methods, which we provide as know-how, opens up the students to work more actively together and as time goes by to feel that learning is something the doesn’t start and end with the classroom; it is an ongoing process for a lifetime.

  • ANALYTICAL THINKING

The methods, discussions and team activities are a good way to motivate the students to look closely at a film, to notice details and look for answers to riddles.

  • MORE UNDERSTANDING

An important condition of the CineClub is all students to be seated in a circle. Activities are organized in such a way, so that everyone can be motivated to express themselves without discomfort. Each student is part of the audience and a moderator at the same time. The film selections include topics on which students are often conflicted, so they can be discussed.

WHY SHORT FILMS?

Classes or school events with film screenings and discussions are a proven worldwide practice in the informal education, positively complimenting the educational needs of the younger generation. We improve this practice by the addition of methods, the selection of short films and specific approach to the communication with students, so they can develop their analytical thinking, be provoked to be more inquisitive and feel art as something that can enrich them.
Short films are provocative; they don’t require long-term concentration and allow for a flexible programming. The cultural variety in short films is huge – Hollywood doesn’t dominate!

NO MODERATOR, EVERYONE IS PART OF THE PROCESS

A key element of this project is that it gives all students the freedom to self-organize and moderate a CineClub without the need of a host/moderator from outside the school. Our organization contacts 2-3 students willing to volunteer for Kinematograf and pass a training, during which we teach them all the know-how needed for conducting a CineClub. Furthermore, they receive a certificate for Informal Education Skills. Once they finish the training, the students start to pick short film selections, methods and topics for the CineClub on their own, while our team provides technical and administrative help, as well as logistics.

* there’s no form of commitment, including legal or financial, between Kinematograf and the students.

AGGRESSION

Incidents in Bulgarian schools, resulting from aggressive behavior, happen daily and just for the school year of 2017/2018, the fight incidents that resulted in deaths are 3. Sitting in a circle, discussions, preparation of the student moderators, the active engagement between all participants and the careful selection of movies, are something we believe could have a long-term positive impact on the relationships between students, developing empathy, respect and overall critical view towards any form of abuse.

UNDERSTANDING AND ACCEPTING THOSE WHO ARE DIFFERENT, DOES NOT NEED TO BE DISCUSSED STRAIGHT FORWARD.

PROGRAMS UNDERGO EXTERNAL EXPERT EVALUATION

Report at a scientific conference + 180min demonstration
At a national conference held at SWU on the topic of "Innovative Methods in Philosophy Teaching" (Apr 2018) we presented a report in front of teachers from the whole country, experts from "Regional Direction of Education SW " and students. The report included information related to our educational activities for the past 3 years – progress, discoveries, and challenges. After that we demonstrated a “live” CineClub with all participants, so they can evaluate our methods.

Permanent external expert
Dr. Irina Kitova Examines every selected short film as to answer to the high and ethical standards in the gloval cinematography – levels of abuse, manipulation, emotional impact etc., as well as approves their application in an education approach. She teaches "Film Studies" at SWU and is the founder of a charity fund for the financing of short films.

THE INGLOBO EFFECT

The competitive element of some of the methods allows to present more challenge in the CineClubs, which increases the commitment. We chose an issue of InGlobo magazine as an award, because it is an original Bulgarian edition and because it complements the message of the project – knowledge is power.

CINECLUBS BUILD A COMMUNITY

Mario and Maggie from 9th FLS have their own show regarding films on Teen Station – media, self-organized by students. The podcast is closely related to the topics of the CineClubs, giving students the opportunity to gain experience as media editors as well. Besides an exciting experiment with over 30 schools in its network, the podcast promotes the club among the right audience for CineClubs.

ATTITUDE TOWARDS DESIGN

; ?>It is hard to catch the attention of the young generation because of the overload with media content. That’s why CineClubs experiment with non-traditional ways to communicate with students long before it officially started. Through this, we bring back the sensation among them that schools can actually surprise them and speak their language.
